Arizona’s three public universities have collaborated to create a student-led health and wellness clinic for the homeless. The clinic opened in February of 2014. Faculty and students from Arizona State University, University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University have teamed up. They created the Student Health Outreach for Wellness (SHOW). The program provides free clinical services, programming and support for the Phoenix homeless.
The clinic is located at 12th Avenue and Jefferson Street in the Health Care for the Homeless facility on the Human Services Campus. It is in partnership with Health Care for the Homeless and Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS).
The idea was founded when ASU students and faculty saw a major gap in services for the homeless during evenings and weekends.
U of A provides medical school students and Master of Public Health students, NAU provides students from their Physician Assistant and Physical Therapy programs and ASU supplies students from their College of Nursing and Health Innovation and College of Health Solutions.
The clinic works to educate the homeless about a multitude of health concerns, offers classes on topics like nutrition and diabetes and provides students with hands-on clinical experience while working side-by-side with health care professionals. Students from an array of disciplines work to provide a holistic approach to health and wellness such as walking groups, yoga and art classes. The clinic is licensed and operated by professionals who will supervise the students as they work.
